TROOPING THE COLOUR 2016 (MAJOR GENERAL'S REVIEW)

The Major General's Review is the first rehearsal for the Trooping the Colour parade. It took place on Saturday, 28 May 2016 (exactly two weeks before the actual Queen's birthday parade).

Trooping the Colour is a ceremony performed by the regiments of the British and Commonwealth armies. It takes place on Horse's Guards Parade near London St James Park, and it marks THE QUEEN'S OFFICIAL BIRTHDAY!

The custom of Trooping of the Colours dates back to the 17th century when the colours of the regiments were used as a rallying point in battle and therefore trooped in front of the soldiers every day to make sure that each man could recognise those of his own regiment. The ceremonial of the modern Trooping of the Colour parade celebrating The Sovereign's Birthday by Grenadier Guards is in 1748. This impressive display is now held on occasion to celebrate the Queen's official birthday.

Trooping the Colour takes place in June each year (and this year it will take place on 11 June 2016), and it is carried out by the Queen's personal troops, the Household Division, on Horse's Guards Parade, with the Queen herself in attendance and taking salute.

Here are some of my favourite moments from the review:
